There is often a common belief that items featured on the internet will always be cheaper than an identical item purchased from a high street retailer.

The travel industry however is slightly different. Tour operators contract aircraft seats and hotel beds well in advance. These are the ultimate perishable product. Once the aircraft is sat on the tarmac any empty seats can never be sold again.

In these circumstances tour operators may well take the view that anything is better than nothing. They will discount their holidays to maximise yields and profits. Some of the better quality tour operators however are wary of offering last-minute discounts. They see them as devaluing their brand and possibly causing unrest among those that bought the holiday at full price.
